WRIGHT PARK ZOO

1 of 2
The history of Wright Park Zoo dates back to 1926 when the City acquired two North American black bears and raccoons for display. Animal enclosures were scattered throughout the park until mid-1980 was when the zoo was consolidated into approximately four acres in the southwest section of the park. In the mid-1990s, an adjacent motorsports facility closed and the zoo acquired three additional acres for future expansion. The zoo currently is home to about 126 animals representing 30 or so species from almost every continent of the earth and entertains 60,000 visitors a year. In October of 2010, the zoo gained accreditation with the Zoological Association of America (ZAA).
In 2019, the City approved renovation & expansion plans for Wright Park Zoo. Major projects are scheduled for opening in 2021 with a renovated and expanded Black Bear exhibit and new Fox exhibit. Again in 2026 with an innovative new Wolf habitat with views beyond into Bison and a new Bobcat exhibit. In 2028, the new Barn with goat interaction, and 2030 with the River Otters, are also major projects. Given an expected 2019 attendance of 39,000 (down from previous years) and utilizing historical growth data from the Zoo and from benchmark facilities around the country, the Wright Park Zoo can expect to reach an attendance of 115,000 in 2030 if all new projects are implemented as planned.
